- Becoming a Christian is about entering into a real relationship with God through His Son Jesus. God is love and has not, does not, and will not be or do anything that is not an expression of love. People on the other hand without God are selfish by nature (sin) and in their thoughts and behaviors (sins). That separates them from God not because God wants to reject them but because like water and oil- God and ungodly- love and selfishness cannot mix. Someone had to bridge the gap between God and people so Jesus came as the Son of man (relating to people) and the Son of God (love) to be a sacrifice (pay the price) for people’s sin (nature) and sins (behaviors). He did that by dying on the cross and then being resurrected from the dead to live with Father God.
The Bible declares that a person needs to choose to believe in their heart and verbally express with their mouth that Jesus through His life, death and resurrection saves them from sin and sins and therefore enables them to come to the Father in a family type relationship. One’s very core being (inner man) is changed into the nature of Love so that they can now function in a real relationship with God and others. God then becomes our spiritual Father and we relate to Him as sons and daughters. Father God also promises us the gift of Holy Spirit who fills us with the power of God and enables us to understand and obey His love in our thoughts and behaviors as we learn about God through His word (the Bible). Through water baptism we express our new life with God through Jesus and our release from our old nature and behaviors. In coming to God through Jesus it is something we must believe beyond any doubt since we cannot directly see God. It is more than just an intellectual understanding like knowing 2 + 2 = 4. It is beyond just feeling good or excited for awhile like at a sporting event. It is something for which I am willing to embrace and let change my life for all time. It is committing to an eternal relationship with Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit along with fellow believers.
